COOLANGATTA, Queensland, Australia (Thursday, March 5, 2026) – The World Surf League is excited to announce two new international events in the Philippines in 2026 across two separate tours. The Siargao International Surfing Cup, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission International Qualifying Series event, will now run as part of the newly announced QS 6000 International level of events, while the La Union Longboard Classic, presented by Philippine Sports Commission, is now a part of the elite level WSL Longboard Tour.
The upgrades to both events are thanks to the expansion of the partnership between the WSL and the Philippine Sports Commission. The expanded partnership will see both events locked in at this level for at least 2 years, guaranteeing year-round high-level professional surfing in the Philippines.
“The Philippines is an amazing country filled with so many world-class waves, and we are thrilled to partner with the Philippines Government to bring these international WSL events to the Philippines’ shores,” said WSL APAC President. “Cloud 9 has been running high-level events for decades now and has become a favourite spot for the world’s best surfers. La Union has one of the strongest longboard scenes in Asia and is a fantastic wave for competition, so it is the best place to represent the Asia region on the world stage. These events will not only attract some of the best surfers in the world, but will also offer plenty of opportunities for local surfers through wildcard spots, whilst stimulating local economies and providing global exposure to the Philippines and its incredible beauty. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission and thank them sincerely for their ongoing partnership and support.”
“The elevation of the WSL event in Siargao to a QS 6000 international competition and the inclusion of La Union in the elite WSL Longboard Tour fully align with our goal to show the world that the Philippines is a serious sporting destination,” said Patrick C. Gregorio, Chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission. “We are proud to work with the World Surf League in positioning our coastline as a global arena for elite sports and a top-tier tourism showcase. Anticipating up to 50 nations competing on our shores across the two competitions, our waves, our communities, and our hospitality stand ready to welcome the world.”
Having hosted a number of WSL events over the last five years, including a Longboard International event and two World Junior Championships, Monoliza Point in La Union, the Philippines, is a world-class right-hander that offers consistency and quality in spades and will play as a perfect location for Stop No. 3 on the 2026/27 WSL Longboard Tour. La Union is a surf-mad town, known as one of Asia’s longboarding hubs and is home to one of the Longboard Tour’s standout performers in the last few years, Rogelio Jr Esquievel (PHL).

2026 will also see the introduction of Qualifying Series 6,000 International (QS 6,000 INTL) events. These events will award 6,000 ranking points and be open to international competitors. Top seeds from each region will receive entry, and events will be held in premier locations worldwide. Competitors will be able to have their earned points count towards their CS rankings and their Regional QS rankings. Regional surfers from the host region will count the result in their Regional rankings. The new QS 6,000 INTL events will feature seven to nine day windows, a men’s field of 144 and a women’s field of 80. Cloud 9 is one of three world-class locations confirmed for this new event format, which is expected to attract some of the best surfers on the planet looking to qualify for the elite Championship Tour.Â
The 2026 Siargao International Surfing Cup, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, Qualifying Series 6000 International event, will run at Cloud 9 in Siargao, Philippines, from October 16 – 25, 2026. The La Union International Longboard Pro presented by the Philippine Sports Commission will run at Urbiztondo Beach, La Union, Philippines, from January 20 – 24, 2027. Both events are supported by SDMI Sports.
